Tools we looked at and left out
- Flowise. GitHub marks the project archived (read-only). Its last push was Aug 13, 2026, so it will not get new updates.
- GPT4All. Its last commit was May 27, 2025, more than 12 months ago.
- Botpress. This repository holds tools and add-ons for Botpress Cloud. It is not a chatbot you can run yourself.
- Cal.diy (the open version of Cal.com). Its own README says it is for personal, non-production use, and that running it takes advanced server skills.
- PrivateGPT. It is now a programming interface for developers, not an app an owner can use.
- LocalAI, whisper.cpp, OpenAI Whisper, OCRmyPDF. Built for developers and the command line. Owners are better served by Jan, Buzz, Vibe and Paperless-ngx, which use the same kinds of parts under a friendlier screen.
How we checked
We read each project’s own README and license on Nov 1, 2026. Stars and last-commit dates come straight from the GitHub API, fetched that same day. They change, so open the GitHub page for today’s numbers. We dropped anything archived or with no commits in about 12 months. We did not install or test every tool, and we show no hours-saved numbers because none of these projects publish a sourced one.
We started from the big developer list awesome-ai-agents (MIT license, 300+ agent tools) as one source of ideas. Most of it is for developers, so this list is our own small-business pick. Read how we pick.
Quick answers
Are these tools really free?
The code is free to download and use. Some cost nothing but your time. Others, like n8n, Invoice Ninja and DocuSeal, also sell a hosted version for a monthly fee. Running a tool yourself is free, but you may pay for a server or for the AI models it connects to. Each card says what we found.
Do I need to know how to code?
Not for the ones tagged Easy. You download them like any other app. The ones tagged Needs a tech helper are usually set up once by someone who has done it before. Their time may cost money.
Is my data private if I use these?
It can be. If a tool runs a model on your own computer, your words stay there. If it connects to an outside AI service, that service sees what you send it. Check each tool's own privacy notes before you put customer details in.
